WEBBERVILLE, Mich. A portion of Interstate 96 in southeast Michigan remains closed on Sunday following a tragic accident where a semitruck collided with over a dozen vehicles, resulting in the loss of four lives and injuries to 17 individuals, as per state police reports.
Traffic on I-96 near Webberville had been halted temporarily late Saturday due to utility work on power lines in the vicinity. A semitruck with a trailer traveling westbound around 11:45 p.m. crashed into the stationary vehicles.
“It seems the driver of the semitruck failed to notice the congestion and was unable to halt the vehicle in time,” stated Michigan State Police on the social media platform X.
The collision led to the semitruck and several vehicles catching fire, with more than a dozen vehicles involved in the incident.
Authorities confirmed the tragic loss of four lives and stated that 17 individuals, including the truck driver, sustained injuries and were taken to nearby medical facilities.
Michigan State Police disclosed on Sunday that the deceased victims included a 29-year-old man from Carson City driving a Ford pickup truck and three relatives from Lansing who were in a Chevy Trax. The individuals were identified as a 20-year-old female, a 43-year-old female, and a 47-year-old male. Their relationship was not specified by the police.
Efforts for cleanup are ongoing on Sunday, with Michigan State Police announcing that I-96 in the accident area will remain closed for an unspecified duration.
