A reward is being offered for information on the person who shot a California sea lion in Huntington Beach.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is offering a $20,000 reward to anyone who can help identify the individual responsible for shooting the sea lion.
NOAA has been collaborating with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department since Aug. 7, when the injured sea lion was found on Bolsa Chica State Beach.
Despite efforts by a rescue group to save the sea lion, it unfortunately passed away the following day.
The fatal bullet was discovered during a subsequent autopsy.
Sea lions and other marine mammals are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.
Violators of the law can face significant fines and up to a year in prison if caught.
