A network outage affected credit unions across the prairies on November 15th, causing delays in automatic deposits and payments for customers in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba for several hours.
Several credit unions in the three provinces posted advisories on their websites regarding the early morning outage, with most reporting restored service by early afternoon.
Manitoba
The advisory from Access Credit Union in Manitoba explained that a vendor supplying payment services to most credit unions in the Prairies experienced a network issue on November 15th. This led to a delay in automatic deposits and automated fund withdrawals for loan payments.
Access Credit Union, serving over 200,000 customers in Winnipeg and Southern Manitoba, confirmed that payments had resumed processing by 12:45 p.m.
“These payments will be processed promptly as long as funds are available,” Access Credit Union assured. “If you incurred any NSF charges or other costs due to this outage, please contact us for reimbursement.”
Assiniboine Credit Union in Winnipeg also issued a similar advisory on its website, stating that clients affected by the network outage would not face any fees or penalties. An update later in the afternoon confirmed that connectivity had been restored.
“Deposits and payments are expected to resume processing this afternoon,” the advisory mentioned.
Saskatchewan
Affinity Credit Union in Saskatchewan addressed the outage, noting that the network connectivity issue caused delays in direct deposits and check clearing. Wire transfers were also unavailable during this time.
An update mentioned that delayed direct deposits were being credited to member accounts over the next few hours.
Conexus also issued a statement, confirming that the credit union would cover any fees associated with the glitch.
“The hardware issue has been resolved, and payments are now processing,” Conexus stated. “Members will see payments in their accounts, with processing continuing until all payments are completed today.”
Alberta
Servus, Alberta’s largest credit union, announced on social media that direct deposits to and from accounts were delayed. They later confirmed the issue was resolved and ensured all scheduled transactions would be processed later in the day, covering any incurred fees.
ABCU Credit Union reported being unaffected by the outage due to using a different service provider but warned that payments from affected credit unions might face delays.
“Rest assured, no late fees or penalties will be charged by ABCU Credit Union as a result of this disruption,” the credit union assured.
