Korean American Foundation USA Honors Veterans at Annual Dinner

The Korean American Foundation USA and a local chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association co-hosted the annual veteran appreciation dinner in Wallkill on Nov. 13.

Started 35 years ago to honor Korean War veterans, the event has expanded to include all veterans, as stated by Hubert Lee, the long-time president of the foundation and sponsor of this tradition.

At the dinner, Lee expressed gratitude for veterans from various wars, emphasizing their crucial role in upholding freedom, peace, and democracy.

He highlighted the continued threat of communism and the importance of remaining vigilant in the fight against it, referencing Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s defense of South Korea.

During the event, Wallkill Supervisor George Serrano extended his thanks to all veterans, recognizing their sacrifices across different conflicts.

The majority of attendees were members of the local Korean American community, showcasing the diverse backgrounds of those who have served the country.

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus, a Navy commander, shared his experiences in South Korea during the dinner, emphasizing the strong bond between American and Korean allies.

Arthur Deutsch, the sole surviving Korean War veteran from the first appreciation dinner in 1989, echoed sentiments of gratitude towards the South Korean people for their unwavering support.

Hubert Lee, the founder of Korean American Foundation USA, highlighted the foundation’s contributions to orphaned and handicapped children in South Korea, showcasing a commitment to philanthropy.

Lee’s admiration for Western literature and his poetic tribute to Korean War veterans underscore his dedication to honoring their legacy and the enduring partnership between Koreans and Americans.

In addition to his leadership in the foundation, Lee serves on the Orange County Human Rights Commission, furthering his advocacy for equality and justice.
