Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley announced his candidacy for the position of Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair, succeeding Jaime Harrison. O’Malley, who served as mayor of Baltimore and ran in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary, expressed his intention to resign from his role as head of the Social Security Administration to pursue the DNC chairmanship.
The DNC chair position must be filled by March 1, 2025, as per the party’s bylaws. The incoming chair will play a crucial role in shaping the party’s direction leading up to the 2026 midterm elections and beyond.
The new chair will also oversee the party’s 2028 nominating process, potentially influencing the selection of the party’s presidential nominee. O’Malley’s decision to run comes after criticism of Harrison’s support for President Joe Biden and the handling of the 2024 election campaign.
The DNC, with 440 voting members, will elect the new chair and other officers between Jan. 1, 2025, and March 1, 2025. The Epoch Times reached out to O’Malley for comment.
