There is a disturbing sight of mentally unstable individuals wandering the streets of New York, often seen talking to themselves or to the world at large on a daily basis.
Tragically, on Monday, one of these individuals went on a stabbing spree, resulting in the deaths of three innocent victims.Â
How many more lives must be lost before action is taken?
Ramon Rivera, despite his evident mental health issues and a criminal history spanning multiple states with at least eight arrests in New York, was released early from Rikers this year after serving time for burglaries and assaults.Â
This was the first in a series of failures that led to the tragic events that unfolded.
On the very day of his release, Rivera stole a $1,500 bowl from a high-end home goods store in Manhattan. Although prosecutors sought bail, a judge released him on non-monetary conditions.Â
This was the second critical failure in the chain of events.Â
How is it possible that despite the glaring errors in the system, a man with a history of criminal behavior and mental health issues was allowed to walk free?
Rivera’s criminal record includes arrests for domestic violence and other offenses in Florida since 2003, assault in Cleveland in 2017, and burglary in New Jersey in January. He also spent time in the Bellevue psychiatric ward in May, where he assaulted a correctional officer.Â
How many warning signs does one individual need to exhibit before action is taken?
The city government seems unable or unwilling to address the dangers posed by individuals with mental illness on the streets.
With the ongoing dysfunction at Rikers Island and lenient bail policies, the tragic consequences continue to mount.
Three lives were lost in this incident, and it could have been more if not for the brave actions of civilians who intervened after the third attack.Â
It is evident that Rivera should have been in a mental health institution.Â
Given the initial failure in his release and subsequent arrests, he should have been immediately returned to prison or a mental health facility.Â
New York requires significant changes to restore public safety, combating the crime and disorder perpetuated by leftist ideologies and the Democratic leadership in Gotham and Albany.Â
Without such reforms, the cycle of violence will only continue.Â
