SANTA ANA, Calif.—Republican Rep. Michelle Steel conceded defeat on Wednesday as her opponent, Derek Tran, continued to increase his lead in the 45th Congressional District race, which includes parts of Los Angeles and Orange counties.
In a statement, Steel expressed gratitude for the opportunities she had in the United States and her time serving in Congress. She thanked her supporters, staff, family, and volunteers for their unwavering support throughout her campaign.
Tran currently holds a 613-vote lead over Steel in the latest election results, with a margin of 50.1 percent to 49.9 percent, according to the Secretary of State’s office.
Despite the relatively slim margin, Tran declared victory earlier in the week, emphasizing the importance of representing the community’s needs and priorities in Washington.
Tran’s lead has grown steadily since the initial results from the Nov. 5 election, with him overtaking Steel on Nov. 16 after trailing by 11,363 votes initially.
