The Liberal government is set to pass a sales tax holiday plan today, as a motion was introduced to expedite the legislative review process.
Gould’s motion outlined that if the bill is approved at the second reading stage, it will bypass the committee review and be deemed passed after the third reading. Once a bill passes the third reading, it is sent to the Senate for further review.
The proposed GST/HST sales tax exemption will be in effect for two months, starting from Dec. 14 to Feb. 15, covering items such as children’s clothing, toys, Christmas trees, snack foods, beer, and wine.
The Finance Department estimates the tax relief to provide Canadians with $1.6 billion in savings.
During the closure motion debate, Conservative MP Damian Kurek criticized the Liberals for offering a “small tax trick for a few Canadians,” highlighting the limited coverage of Christmas trees and proposing the elimination of the carbon tax instead.
Minister of Revenue Marie-Claude Bibeau defended the tax break, emphasizing the government’s recognition of the challenges faced by families and the importance of providing relief during tough times.
NDP MP Laurel Collins expressed her party’s support for the tax break and proposed the permanent removal of GST on essential items.
