Authorities in Cook County, Illinois, auctioned off Robin McElroy’s home due to delinquent property taxes. In addition, they claimed she owed three years of rent to the new owner. However, McElroy has proof of paying her taxes annually since purchasing the property in 2012. In a letter from 2019, the county confirmed that there was no basis for a sale and that her property’s information had been erroneously linked to her neighbor’s on the assessor’s website, resulting in her taxes being applied to the wrong house. Despite this revelation, the error was never rectified until CBS News Chicago intervened and prompted the assessor’s office to correct the mistake. Officials have stated that they are actively working to resolve the issue.
