Following a controversial incident involving one of Australia’s largest hotel and pub chains, Australian Venues Co, pub owner Michael Offerdahl of Toobeah Hotel Motel in country Queensland expressed his thoughts. The chain initially decided to ban Australia Day celebrations across its 200 venues, causing uproar among the public and prompting a backlash. The management later issued an apology, acknowledging the hurt caused by their decision.
Offerdahl emphasized the role of pubs as gathering points in small Australian towns, acting as a representation of the local community. He highlighted the importance of upholding and protecting Australia’s national day of celebration, criticizing corporate governance for dictating venues’ actions against the wishes of the majority.
Instead of working against Australia Day, Offerdahl suggested that governments should embrace and promote the celebration alongside hotels, allowing Australians to freely honor their country on January 26. He criticized the hotel chain for not supporting the sentiments of the Australian people, attributing it to a flawed corporate governance strategy.
Company’s Backflip
Australian Venue Co faced backlash from the public following their announcement to cancel Australia Day celebrations. Patrons circulated lists of their businesses on social media, urging boycotts and cancellations of event bookings. On December 2, the company issued an apology on social media, expressing regret for causing division instead of fostering community in their venues. They clarified that it is not their place to dictate how individuals should celebrate Australia Day.
