Manhunt for Assassin of UnitedHealthCare CEO Continues
The search for the cold-blooded assassin who killed UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown entered its second day on Thursday, with investigators having a wealth of clues to work with.
One of the key pieces of evidence is the chilling first image of the masked suspect grinning widely. NYPD detectives and FBI agents are following leads and analyzing evidence in the hopes of identifying the killer.
Clues in the Investigation
The killer may have used a modern version of a rare World War II spy gun, the B&T VP9. Investigators are looking into the purchase of this firearm in connection to the murder.
Surveillance video showed the gunman using a pistol with a silencer, indicating a level of expertise with firearms.
Investigation Leads to Upper West Side Hostel
Investigators traced the suspected killer’s movements to the HI New York City Hostel on the Upper West Side, where the suspect was captured on surveillance footage.
The suspect had been staying at the hostel since Nov. 30, using a fake New Jersey ID to check in.
Search for Killer’s Getaway Vehicle and Items
The electric bicycle used by the killer to flee the scene has not been located. Police initially believed it was a Citi Bike, but later determined otherwise.
A burner phone and water bottle were found near the scene and are being analyzed for clues. Fingerprints were recovered from these items as well.
Officials believe the suspect purchased two water bottles from a Starbucks near the hotel before the murder.
