As Senator Laphonza Butler, Democrat of California, prepares to leave the Senate after years of service, she reflects on her time in office and shares her thoughts on the future.
Q: Senator Butler, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. How are you feeling as your final week in the Senate approaches?
A: Thank you for having me. It’s bittersweet, of course. I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished during my time in office, but I’m also excited to see what the future holds.
Q: What do you consider to be your greatest achievement during your time in the Senate?
A: One of my proudest moments was passing the healthcare reform bill that expanded access to affordable healthcare for all Californians. It was a long and difficult battle, but it was worth it to see the positive impact it had on so many people’s lives.
Q: What are your plans for the future after leaving the Senate?
A: I plan to continue advocating for social justice issues and working to empower marginalized communities. I’m also looking forward to spending more time with my family and pursuing some personal interests that I haven’t had time for while in office.
Q: Any final thoughts or messages for your constituents?
A: I want to thank the people of California for entrusting me with this position and allowing me to serve them. It has been an honor and a privilege, and I hope to continue making a difference in whatever path I choose to take next.
We wish Senator Butler all the best in her future endeavors and thank her for her dedication to public service.
