U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has once again brought up Canada’s sovereignty, expressing his interest in meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom he mistakenly referred to as a state “governor.”
This remark seems to be a nod to Trump’s recent joke suggesting that Canada could potentially become the 51st U.S. state, with Trudeau as the governor.
Trump mentioned that he is excited to meet the “Governor” again soon to further discuss tariffs and trade, anticipating that the outcomes will be highly beneficial for all parties involved, as per the incoming U.S. president.
On Nov. 25, the president-elect announced his plans to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico if they do not enhance their border security measures.
Trudeau also made comments at the Halifax event regarding unspecified countries, hinting that they may regret their election choices.
“I think there’s a number of folks in different countries, and I won’t point out any particular one, where folks are going to be wondering about the choice they maybe made in elections,” he said.
“Let’s not be that kind of country in Canada, let’s be deliberate about the choices we make if we want to stop fighting climate change, if we want to re-legalize assault style weapons, if we want to put back into question women’s rights.”
Trump’s social media post labeling Trudeau as a governor is just one of many communications from Trump regarding Canada’s status and trade relations with the United States.
“If we’re going to subsidize them, let them become a state [of the U.S.],” he remarked.
When asked to comment on Trump’s recent remark, Liberal ministers expressed their pride in Canada and determination to defend the national interest.
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland emphasized, “I am so proud of our country. I am so proud of the true north, strong and free.” She refrained from directly addressing Trump’s suggestion of making Canada a U.S. state, stating that it is a matter for the president-elect.
Before the weekly cabinet meeting, Treasury Board President Anita Anand stressed the importance of Canada’s sovereignty. Immigration Minister Marc Miller cautioned against using Truth Social as a basis for public policy decisions.
Health Minister Mark Holland emphasized the need for maturity as a nation and taking responsibility for actions within our control rather than reacting to every comment made.
