Lawmakers and human rights advocates are urging for action in response to Beijing’s efforts to manipulate Western democratic systems to target Falun Gong. The regime’s use of disinformation and lawfare to discredit Falun Gong globally is a more cunning approach compared to past violent tactics used in communist China. This shift in strategy has raised concerns among lawmakers, who are calling for countermeasures to address the CCP’s suppression activities. Rep. Andy Ogles and Rep. Jim McGovern have both expressed alarm at the CCP’s persecution of Falun Gong practitioners and have vowed to uphold human rights standards. Rep. Tom Tiffany has proposed legislation to push back against Chinese influence operations in the United States. The focus now is on holding the CCP accountable for its transnational suppression activities and safeguarding freedom in America.
Recently, numerous social media accounts have surfaced targeting Falun Gong and Shen Yun Performing Arts, a group founded by Falun Gong practitioners showcasing traditional Chinese culture before the communist regime’s rise in 1949 and the CCP’s persecution of the faith.
During the summer, whistleblowers revealed internal meeting notes where Chinese officials were instructing the dissemination of negative content to a specific social media influencer, who has claimed responsibility for the attacks on Shen Yun.
Wang Zhiyuan, the head of the World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong, noted that targeting Falun Gong aligns with the regime’s political objectives during a period of economic and political instability over the past two years. Suppression of Falun Gong diverts attention from internal problems and has been a longstanding tactic of the regime.
Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) emphasized the need for increased scrutiny of CCP activities, particularly in utilizing administrative systems to violate civil and human rights.
