Attorney Thomas Dickey has stated that Luigi Mangione is pleading not guilty and is fighting against extradition attempts. Dickey, who is representing the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, emphasized that he has not seen any evidence proving his client’s guilt.
During a hearing in Pennsylvania, Dickey informed reporters that there is no evidence linking Mangione to the shooting of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Law enforcement officials claim that Mangione approached Thompson on a New York City sidewalk and fatally shot him in the back.
Dickey reiterated that Mangione intends to plead not guilty, emphasizing the presumption of innocence in the American justice system. He stated that the burden of proof lies with the government, and they must produce evidence to support their claims.
The lawyer also revealed his decision to contest government efforts to extradite Mangione to face charges. This legal challenge could prolong the process, as defendants usually waive their right to fight extradition.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed gratitude for law enforcement’s arrest of Mangione and announced plans to sign a governor’s warrant for his trial.
Mangione was given 14 days to formally challenge the extradition, while prosecutors were granted 30 days to obtain the governor’s warrant. District Attorney Pete Weeks confirmed their collaboration with law enforcement agencies to expedite the process.
Mangione was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, where police discovered multiple fake IDs, a firearm, and a silencer in his possession. Reports suggest that Mangione had previously suffered a back injury and undergone surgery, but his lawyer declined to comment on this matter.
Despite Mangione’s outburst before the hearing, Dickey described him as outspoken and expressed his commitment to representing his client effectively. The lawyer emphasized the importance of building trust with Mangione and ensuring his confidence in the legal defense.
Mangione’s background in Maryland, where his family owns a country club, has drawn attention, but relatives have declined to comment on the case. The family expressed shock and devastation over Mangione’s arrest and extended condolences to Thompson’s family.
