Australia’s population has grown by over half a million people in just 12 months, with twice as many migrant arrivals as local births.
In the past year to June 30, a total of 666,800 new migrants entered Australia, while 221,200 individuals left the country. Additionally, the country recorded 289,100 births and 182,700 deaths.
Based on calculations by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the total population increase accounts for a net increase of 445,600 migrants and 106,400 births, totaling 552,000 new people and a population increase of 2.1 percent.
Furthermore, Australia’s birth rate is decreasing, with a 0.7 percent drop compared to the previous year.
States with the Largest Population Growth
According to ABS demography head Beidar Cho, Australia’s overall population now stands at 27.2 million people.
Western Australia experienced the fastest population growth at 2.8 percent, followed by Victoria at 2.4 percent, and Queensland at 2.3 percent. On the other hand, Tasmania (0.3 percent), Northern Territory (0.8 percent), South Australia (1.4 percent), New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory (1.7 percent) had the lowest rates of population increase.
England tops the list of countries with the highest percentage of overseas migrants to Australia, followed by India, China, New Zealand, and the Philippines. Most international migrants settled in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia.
Queensland gained the most residents through domestic migration, followed by Western Australia, while New South Wales and the Northern Territory lost significant numbers of local residents.
Migration Trends: Looking Ahead
Professor Alan Gamlen from the Australian National University predicts a decline in the nation’s post-pandemic migrant boom.
He notes, “Net overseas migration is declining faster than it grew post-pandemic, indicating a return to normalcy.” The Australian government is aiming to reduce net migration to 260,000 this financial year and plans to decrease foreign student numbers to 270,000 by 2025.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton mentioned potential adjustments to migrant intake policies if elected in May, stating, “We’ll review the economic settings upon assuming office.”
