New York City Congressman Criticizes Governor’s Response to Drug Market in South Bronx
New York City Congressman Ritchie Torres is criticizing Governor Kathy Hochul for her “passive” stance on an open-air drug market in the South Bronx.
An exposĂ© by the New York Post revealed that “The Hub,” a commercial zone in the Bronx, has become a hub for drug activity despite efforts to clean up the area.
Torres, who is considering a run for governor, wrote a letter to Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams calling for changes to New York’s bail and evidence-discovery laws. He also urged for greater authority to place individuals with severe mental illness and addiction into involuntary care.
He stated, “The Governor would never tolerate an open-air drug market outside of the governor’s mansion,” highlighting the need for a more proactive approach to addressing the issue.
Torres emphasized the need for a long-term solution to the drug problem in the area, pointing out the persistence of drug activity despite past cleanup efforts.
Efforts by City Hall and the NYPD to address the drug market have been unsuccessful, with conditions remaining unchanged despite various initiatives.
Torres highlighted the issue of recidivism contributing to the ongoing problem, with criminals feeling emboldened due to perceived leniency in the criminal justice system.
In response to Torres’ criticisms, a spokesperson for Governor Hochul emphasized the administration’s commitment to public safety and efforts to address repeat offenders.
Torres’ call for action coincided with Governor Hochul’s pledge to make it easier to involuntarily commit and treat dangerous mentally ill individuals, although details of the plan have faced criticism for being vague.
Mayor Eric Adams also unveiled plans to help mentally ill and homeless individuals in his recent State of the City address, including proposals for new facilities and expanded powers to address the issue.
Despite ongoing efforts by officials, the drug problem in the South Bronx persists, highlighting the need for more comprehensive and effective solutions.
