Police Search for Suspect in Fire Outside Bernie Sanders’ Office
Authorities in Vermont are on the lookout for a suspect who allegedly started a fire outside the office of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Friday. The fire, which caused minor damages but no injuries, was believed to have been set intentionally.
The unknown male suspect reportedly sprayed a possible accelerant on the office door, ignited it, and then fled the scene. As of now, the suspect is still at large and investigators have not determined a motive for the arson.
Burlington police issued a statement saying, “A significant fire engulfed the door and part of the vestibule, impeding the egress of staff members who were working in the office and endangering their lives. The sprinkler system was able to extinguish most of the fire.”
Earlier that day, the Burlington Fire Department responded to a call and found a fire between the vestibule, elevator, and entrance door of Sanders’ third-floor office. The office door sustained moderate fire damage, and there was significant water damage to the third floor. Sanders and nearby offices were evacuated as a precaution.
A spokesperson for Sanders has not yet commented on the incident. Fortunately, Sanders himself was not present in the office at the time of the fire.
