This situation adds another piece to the puzzle of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) historical connections with international criminal groups, such as Mexican cartels and Chinese triads, in Southeast Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
Investigative journalists Sebastian Rotella, Kirsten Berg, Garrett Yalch, and Clifton Adcock highlight that a Chinese diplomat visited a controversial organization in Oklahoma following a mass murder at a marijuana farm.
French scholar Emmanuel Jourda points out that the CCP leverages influential figures within the Chinese diaspora for intelligence gathering in exchange for business opportunities, regardless of their legal or illegal activities.
Further investigations by ProPublica and The Frontier reveal that financial operations related to Oklahoma’s Chinese marijuana network are concentrated in New York City, particularly in Flushing, Queens.
In the late 1980s, Chinese triads replaced Italian-American mafiosi in the heroin trade, sourcing “China White” heroin from Burmese traffickers and other illicit sources, as reported by The New York Times.
After the revolution, the CCP focused on mainland triads, who relocated to Hong Kong where British attempts to eliminate them were less successful. By 1992, as the CCP’s control over Hong Kong neared, they began collaborating with the triads, even using them against pro-democracy Chinese dissidents.
In New York, the Italian mafia was taken down through the enforcement of RICO laws in the 1970s. However, RICO has not been effectively utilized against the triads or the CCP, which Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) suggests operates as a form of organized crime. U.S. counter-terror laws have also not been applied to the CCP, despite allegations of terrorism and organized crime activities.
Recent reports indicate that the CCP plays a role in transnational organized crime by coordinating with gangs and facilitating criminal and terrorist financial networks across various regions. This includes collaboration with Russia, Iran, and Burmese drug traffickers. Moreover, the CCP enables Mexican cartels by providing fentanyl precursors and assisting in fentanyl-related money laundering activities.
The criminal activities of the CCP have devastating consequences on individuals and families in the United States, with synthetic opioids like fentanyl causing tens of thousands of deaths annually. The historical struggle against the CCP, dating back to the Korean War, illustrates a losing battle for the United States as China’s influence grows.
The intertwining of the CCP with illicit drug networks in the U.S. highlights its origins and continued involvement in organized crime and terrorism. It is crucial for elected officials, academia, and media to recognize and oppose the CCP’s threats and actions to ensure the safety and security of the country.
