Georgia prosecutors and judges are advocating for increased pay in the judicial system to retain experienced attorneys and judges essential for clearing a backlog of court cases statewide, as reported by Stanley Dunlap for the Georgia Recorder. The state Senate public safety subcommittee is exploring ways to amend a state law from the early 1980s that restricts some districts from deploying prosecutors to manage the caseload. Herb Cranford Jr., District Attorney for Coweta County Judicial Circuit, noted a 20 percent turnover among Georgia’s assistant district attorneys in the past two years, with a current 10 percent vacancy rate for state prosecutors. The district attorneys’ association is requesting an increase in the average salary for new assistant district attorneys from $58,000 to $71,000.
