South Korea’s Forceful Response to Protect Territorial Waters From China’s ‘Maritime Militia’

President Yoon highlighted that even North Korea is taking a strong stance against illegal Chinese fishing boats. The President emphasized the need to address the issue of Chinese fishing vessels operating illegally in South Korean waters from the perspective of marine resource security. He expressed South Korea’s commitment to protecting its territorial waters and the livelihoods of its fishermen. President Yoon also urged the Korea Coast Guard to focus on safeguarding citizens’ safety and national interests without political considerations. Additionally, he pledged to enhance the Coast Guard’s capabilities with special-purpose vessels and modern security equipment. The China Coast Guard can collaborate with them to oversee and communicate ship locations, collect maritime data, and offer assistance to the front line as additional support.
