NAPLES, Fla.—NASA has confirmed that a mysterious object that crashed through the roof of a Florida home last month was a piece of space debris from equipment discarded at the International Space Station.
The cylindrical object that crashed into the home in Naples on March 8 was later taken to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral for further analysis.
The metal fragment weighed 1.6 pounds (0.7 kilograms) and measured 4 inches (10 centimeters) tall and roughly 1 1/2 inches (4 centimeters) wide.
Homeowner Alejandro Otero, who was away on vacation at the time of the incident, was shocked when his son informed him of what had happened. Upon returning home, Mr. Otero discovered the object had pierced through his ceiling and damaged the flooring.
“I was trembling. I couldn’t believe it. What are the odds of something crashing into my house with such impact to cause such extensive damage,” Mr. Otero expressed. “I am incredibly thankful that no one was injured.”
