Atlantic City Mayor and His Wife Face Child Endangerment Charges

Small Sr., and his attorney, are framing the issues as a ‘private family matter,’ amid charges of child endangerment against him and his wife, La’Quetta Small, who is the superintendent of Atlantic City public schools. The charges allege physical and emotional abuse of their 15/16-year-old daughter during December 2023 and January 2024. Marty Small Sr. is accused of hitting his daughter with a broom, threatening to harm her, and punching her, while La’Quetta Small is accused of punching, dragging, and hitting their daughter with a belt. Marty Small Sr. faces additional charges of terroristic threats, aggravated assault, and simple assault, while La’Quetta Small faces three counts of simple assault. Their attorney asserts that the complaints focus on private family matters and that the Smalls are innocent and will be vindicated. The situation drew media attention, with a local reporter obtaining an affidavit detailing the allegations, including text messages and audio recordings indicating the daughter’s turmoil and feelings of being unsafe at home. This is not the first time Marty Small Sr. has faced accusations; he was previously charged with voter fraud but acquitted both times, later filing a lawsuit against the state and others for malicious prosecution and civil rights violations. In 2015, a New Jersey Superior Court appellate panel ordered the dismissal of Small’s lawsuit.
