Rep. Mike Levin, a vulnerable Democratic House member in California, called for a change in Israeli leadership on Thursday. He expressed the need for new leaders in the region, stating that the current leadership, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is not leading to a more peaceful outcome.
Levin, who is endorsed by the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, has been targeted by the group for his stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict. Despite this, he stands firm in his belief that a change in leadership is necessary for progress.
Levin represents a district in San Diego and Orange counties and won his third term in 2022. He will face Republican Matt Gunderson in the upcoming election, who has criticized Levin for his views on Israel. The National Republican Congressional Committee has also criticized Levin on this issue.
Recent events, including Iran’s missile attack on Israel and pressure from protesters in his district, have further fueled Levin’s call for a change in leadership. He has previously called for a temporary cease-fire to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza while supporting Israel’s defense against Hamas.
Levin emphasized the importance of a leader in Israel committed to a two-state solution and called for Hamas to be removed from power. He distanced himself from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s remarks, stating that the decision for new leadership should come from the Israeli people.
Levin’s stance reflects a growing shift among Democrats regarding their support for Israel, with some leaders calling for new elections in the country. Despite facing backlash, Levin remains steadfast in his belief that change is needed for a peaceful resolution in the region.
