During a visit to the United Steelworkers headquarters in Pennsylvania on April 17, President Joe Biden criticized Beijing, calling them “xenophobic” and highlighting the economic challenges faced by China compared to the United States.
He questioned other world leaders, asking if they would trade places with China and face the country’s demographic issues, such as a larger population in retirement than in the workforce. Biden stated, “They’re xenophobic—nobody else coming in. They’ve got real problems.”
Experts have pointed out that while Chinese state media promotes the surge in exports of “green energy” products as a sign of economic growth, it also reflects the underlying economic challenges faced by China.
Frank Tian Xie, a business professor at the University of South Carolina Aiken, noted that Beijing is eager to overcome its economic challenges. President Biden, in his speech while campaigning in Pennsylvania, emphasized America’s economic strength compared to China, stating that the United States has the best economy in the world.
Biden called for increased tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum products, accusing China of dumping steel in global markets at unfairly low prices due to heavy government subsidies. He emphasized that Chinese practices were damaging American industries.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen also addressed the issue of Chinese dumping practices during her recent visit to China, highlighting the negative impact on American manufacturing jobs.
Various U.S. industries have raised concerns about Chinese practices affecting their sectors, with some warning about the potential extinction of the U.S. auto sector due to cheap Chinese electric vehicles entering the country through Mexico.
Efforts are being made to address these issues, including a probe initiated by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative into Chinese dominance in maritime and shipbuilding sectors. U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai highlighted the coercive power that China’s dominance gives them over other economies.
A U.S. delegation met with Mexico’s president to discuss the influx of Chinese products through Mexico, and labor unions have petitioned for an investigation into Chinese policies impacting various sectors.
