Amid intense opposition from residents, the Chicago City Council has postponed a vote on $70 million in funding for illegal immigrants.
Prior to this request for an additional $70 million, the city had already set aside up to $300 million for illegal immigrants.
The city’s budget committee voted 20-8 to present the proposal to the council.
Alderman Chris Taliaferro expressed concern that city leaders have abandoned the residents of Chicago, stating, “We are neglecting our own people. We have forgotten the residents on the West Side and the South Side.”
The second speaker, in support of funding for illegal immigrants, called the migrant crisis a resource crisis and emphasized the need for more resources to protect new community members.
The third speaker accused city officials of turning their backs on the citizens of Chicago by diverting funds away from city residents to “complete aliens to this country.”
The speaker warned of consequences for the council’s actions, stating, “A reckoning awaits.”
The fourth speaker, who identified as homeless, criticized the council for prioritizing new arrivals over long-time residents, particularly those in the black community.
The fifth speaker, wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, quoted a Bible verse and urged the council to redirect funds from illegal immigrants to address the opioid crisis in the city.
The sixth speaker expressed support for the administration’s efforts in funding illegal immigrants and expressed a desire to contribute to the city.
The seventh speaker called for voting out city officials who support funding for illegal immigrants.
‘Y’all Turned Your Backs on Black Chicago’
The eighth speaker, a social justice advocate, blamed systemic racism for the disparities in funding and support for communities of color in Chicago.
She emphasized the need to reimagine the broken system that perpetuates generational disinvestment in these communities.
The advocate linked this systemic racism to the lack of action on immigration from Congress and called for a reevaluation of priorities at the federal level.
