The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) recently unveiled its five-year plan for the State Water Project—Update 2023. The plan focuses on addressing climate urgency, strengthening watershed resilience, and achieving equity in water management.
Despite the importance of water supplies for California’s population and agriculture, they seem to have a lower priority in the plan.
The public has been misled over the years with water bonds that promised new storage and aqueduct projects but delivered little. The focus on drought resilience, despite recent massive rainfall events, is criticized as unnecessary and costly. Historical weather patterns suggest that extreme weather events have occurred long before human influence on climate.
California’s approach to water management has been called into question, with critics highlighting the wasteful use of water resources to protect endangered species at the expense of human needs. The stringent water conservation measures imposed on residents have also raised concerns about individual liberties and property rights.
California’s water policies and priorities have been subject to criticism, with calls for a more balanced and efficient approach to water management that considers the needs of both humans and the environment.
