Rallies in support of the Free Palestine movement in Australia will continue at major universities in Melbourne throughout the week. Inspired by the U.S. movement, these rallies aim to show solidarity with the Gaza Solidarity Encampments amidst the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. The group Free Palestine Melbourne, inspired by actions in the United States, is organizing these rallies and camps, with events planned at universities like RMIT on May 6 and others like Deakin, La Trobe, Monash, and Melbourne University from May 7. The movement calls for universities to disclose and divest from partnerships with weapons manufacturing companies connected to Israel. Additionally, supporters are encouraged to donate camping gear and food to help the encampments. The continued actions follow similar protests at universities across Australia, with camps set up at various institutions last week. Federal Minister for Education Jason Clare emphasized the importance of maintaining student safety and condemned hate, prejudice, and discrimination during a press conference. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Sydney has allowed the protest campsite to remain, despite acknowledging the discomfort it may cause to some members of the Jewish community. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton raised concerns about the anti-Semitic conduct targeted at the Jewish community and the need to address such behavior.
Dutton expressed concern for the Jewish community, stating they were “scared witless” upon hearing about the Bondi stabbing attack, fearing they were being targeted.
He likened the situation to the 1930s, highlighting the need to address and end such targeted attacks based on heritage or faith to prevent a continuation of such violence.
Minister Addresses Student Safety Amid Protests
Bill Shorten, a federal minister, emphasized the importance of ensuring Jewish students feel safe on campus.
He was informed by friends about protesters taking photos of individuals critical of the rallies, leading to concerns about the impact on student safety.
He further mentioned reports of protestors pressuring individuals to support their cause and taking photos of those who did not comply, stressing the need for Melbourne University to address such behavior to avoid making Jewish students feel unsafe.
