Former President Donald Trump expressed satisfaction that the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach him are on their way out of office.
Tiffany Smiley, a veteransâ advocate and former triage nurse, has announced her candidacy for Washingtonâs 4th Congressional District, currently represented by Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.), one of the 10 Republicans who voted for Trumpâs impeachment in January 2021.
As a Republican candidate, Ms. Smiley launched her campaign in a video posted on X on May 6. In the video, she highlighted her experience in challenging government dysfunction while advocating for veterans as an outsider in Washington. She aims to bring about change from within by addressing deficit-driven government spending and advocating for enhanced border security.
âOur current spending habits, combined with porous borders, are leading to increased crime and drug trafficking in our communities,â she stated in her campaign video. âFamilies are struggling with rising costs while homeless veterans are left without support. We must do better.â
Although she did not directly reference Rep. Newhouseâs impeachment vote in her campaign video, she has previously criticized his decision. In an interview with the National Review, she questioned Newhouse’s suitability for the job given his stance on Trump.
Former President Trump has endorsed U.S. Navy veteran Jerrod Sessler to challenge Rep. Newhouse in the upcoming primary election on Aug. 6, 2024. This means that Ms. Smiley will face a Trump-supported candidate in the primary race.
Out of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, only Rep. Newhouse and Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.) remain in office.
In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, âHappily, the 10 Impeachers are just about gone.â He predicted that Rep. Newhouse will be the next to depart while endorsing Mr. Sessler for Washingtonâs 4th Congressional District.
Aside from Rep. Newhouse and Rep. Valadao, the other eight Republicans who supported Trumpâs impeachment include Reps. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.), Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio), Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.), John Katko (R-N.Y.), Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), Tom Rice (R-S.C.), and Fred Upton (R-Mich.).
âReferendum On The Borderâ
In her campaign video, Ms. Smiley emphasized border security as a crucial issue in the 2024 election.
While she didn’t detail her border security proposals in the video, she expanded on the topic in an op-ed for the Tri-City Herald at the end of March. She stressed that Washington may be distant from the U.S.-Mexico border, but it is not immune to the effects of illegal immigration.
âWith current policies, every state is now a border state, including Washington,â she explained. âThe drugs that were once far away are now in our neighborhoods, schools, and streets.â
Besides the influx of dangerous drugs like fentanyl, she highlighted other issues stemming from an unsecured border, such as American deaths caused by illegal immigrants.
âThis year must be a referendum on the border and the failures of those we elected to fix it,â she asserted. She called for a combination of electronic barriers and physical walls, reinstating the Remain in Mexico policy, and considering tariffs on Mexico to encourage cooperation in curbing illegal immigration.
âThe border crisis affects every state in our nation, and any candidate unwilling to address it is undeserving of your vote,â she concluded.
Mr. Sessler, her primary rival endorsed by Trump, has also committed to enhancing border security, reducing government bureaucracy, and combating leftist ideologies such as critical race theory in education and society.
The latest data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection revealed that 137,480 illegal immigrants were apprehended entering the U.S. between ports of entry in March. This brings the total number under President Biden’s administration, excluding gotaways, to over 9 million. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) believes the actual figure could be closer to 16 million.
Illegal immigration has become a major concern for voters, with a recent Monmouth poll indicating that a majority of Americans now support constructing a border wall with Mexico for the first time in the survey’s history.
Public anxiety about the border crisis has escalated during Biden’s presidency compared to the previous two administrations, according to the poll released in late February. Over 60% of Americans consider illegal immigration a “very serious” issue, a significant rise from previous years.
