Authorities discovered over 200 cats, 46 of them deceased, at a residence in Northern California on May 7, as reported by the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department.
Responding to multiple complaints, sheriff’s deputies and animal care services staff arrived at the home on Sundance Drive in Plumas Lake, a small neighborhood in Yuba County.
Upon arrival, they found cats throughout the house, with most of them fearful of humans and trying to escape, according to the statement.
The resident claimed to operate a feral cat rescue, but it is unclear whether she took in the cats or if they were brought by others.
Details about the woman’s identity have not been disclosed.
The cats, both alive and deceased, are being removed from the premises. As of May 9, efforts to remove the 160 living cats and 46 deceased ones were still ongoing.
Authorities stated that it will take several days to completely remove all the cats from the house.
An investigation has been initiated, and charges may be brought against the individual responsible.
Yuba County Animal Services is seeking donations to assist with the medical care of the cats. Donations can be made by contacting 530-741-6478 or sending contributions to 5245 Feather River Boulevard, Olivehurst, CA 95961.
