Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) and 14 other Democrats have called on President Joe Biden to take executive action on the border following the rejection of the Senate border bill by Republicans.
In a letter addressed to President Biden, Rep. Craig and her Democratic colleagues highlighted the need for immediate action to restore order at the Southern border and address the broken immigration system.
The Democrats emphasized the impact of the current border situation on communities across the country, including the fentanyl crisis and the challenges in providing shelter and services for asylum seekers.
They pointed out the failure of an earlier attempt by the Senate to negotiate an immigration deal, which was attributed to Republicans. The proposed deal, which included border policy changes and funding in exchange for Ukraine aid and national security items, was rejected by Republicans due to concerns about the potential influx of illegal aliens.
Democrats accused their House colleagues of using the border crisis for political gain and criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) for not addressing the national security issue effectively.
While Republicans argued that President Biden has the authority to secure the border without a new law, Democrats stressed the need for immediate action to address the immigration challenges.
Following the letter to President Biden, the White House announced changes to current asylum policy, but some critics deemed these changes insufficient to handle the influx of illegal aliens.
Rep. Craig was joined by Reps. Mike Levin (D-Calif.), Shanice Davids (D-Kan.), Hillary Scholten (D-Mich.), Chris Pappas (D-N.H.), Susie Lee (D-Nev.), Steven Horsford (D-Nev.), Pat Ryan (D-N.Y.), Susan Wild (D-Pa.), Matt Cartwright (D-Pa.), Kim Schrier (D-Wash.), Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), Greg Stanton (D-Ariz.), Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.), and Val Hoyle (D-Ore.) in signing the letter.
