Voters in Maryland, West Virginia, and Nebraska will head to the polls on Tuesday for primaries that will serve as a litmus test for various political dynamics. These include the aftermath of the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, the influence of former President Donald J. Trump within the Republican Party, and the role of money in shaping the Democratic Party.
Maryland’s unexpectedly crucial Senate race
Maryland, typically a solid blue state, became a battleground when Democratic Senator Ben Cardin announced his retirement after three terms. Representative David Trone, a wealthy businessman, seemed poised to secure the Democratic nomination with his substantial financial resources. However, the entrance of Larry Hogan, a popular former Republican governor running as an anti-Trump candidate, and the strong campaign of Angela Alsobrooks, the executive of Prince George’s County, have disrupted the race.
Despite Trone’s staggering $54 million self-funded campaign, Alsobrooks, who could become the third Black woman elected to the Senate, has gained momentum and secured support from key Democratic figures in the state. Maryland Democrats face a choice between a well-funded candidate and a historic candidate.
‘Save democracy’ versus government experience
Over 20 Democrats are competing in Maryland’s Third Congressional District, where the retiring Representative John Sarbanes has a strong Democratic base.
Two standout candidates are Harry Dunn, the Capitol Police officer known for his actions during the January 6 attack and State Senator Sarah Elfreth, who has a record of legislative accomplishments. Dunn’s focus on “saving democracy” has garnered significant donations, while Elfreth emphasizes her experience and steady political rise.
The primary in Nebraska features a moderate Republican, Representative Don Bacon, facing a challenge from a conservative businessman aligned with the Trump wing of the party. The outcome will test the balance between moderation and Trumpism within the GOP.
A troubled coronation in West Virginia
The Republican primary in West Virginia for the seat of retiring Senator Joe Manchin III pits Governor Jim Justice against Representative Alex Mooney, who has the support of former President Trump. While initially poised to be a competitive race, Trump’s endorsement of Justice has significantly impacted the dynamics of the campaign.
The outcome of these primaries will provide insights into the current state of politics in each state and the evolving dynamics within the Republican and Democratic parties.
