There are baseball teams known as the Red Sox and the White Sox. The names of these teams simply come from the color of socks they wore in their uniforms. The term “sox” was a popular slang term for socks in the early twentieth century when both teams were established. Interestingly, they were not the only teams named after their clothing! The Cincinnati Reds were named for their knee-high red socks, and there were also professional teams named the Blues, Maroons, and Grays based on their stockings. However, it’s important to note that the Cleveland Browns are named after their original coach, Paul Brown, and the St. Louis Blues derived their name from a song with the same title.
