An Australian Tribunal has ruled that Elon Musk’s social media company X, formerly known as Twitter, must adhere to local anti-discrimination laws despite being based in America. The ruling came after a complaint by the Australian Muslim Advocacy Network, alleging that X should be held responsible for posts on its site vilifying Muslims. The Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal dismissed X’s argument that it was not subject to the state’s laws, stating that X is present in Queensland by providing services there. The complaint included 29 tweets that denigrated Muslims, leading to the first legal victory against a social media company under Australian vilification laws. The tribunal will issue directions on how the matter proceeds, and X may still appeal the decision. This is not Musk’s first legal battle in Australia, as earlier this year, the Federal court ordered X to remove footage of an alleged terror attack, which Musk defied before the injunction was lifted.
