Around 33,000 of the 30-ounce stainless steel tumblers were distributed as part of a promotion to customers who bought a case of 12 to 15 NÜTRL vodka seltzers at LCBO stores and other authorized retailers between April 29 and May 17.
These white tumblers, featuring the NÜTRL logo, were manufactured in China. Those who received one are urged to discontinue use immediately.
The updated recall notice from May 24 outlines the risks associated with using the product, which was produced by Sunscope.
“Some of the tumblers may contain a chemical solution trapped between the inner walls of the tumbler, which contains sulfuric and phosphoric acids,” states the recall notice. “This solution may be released when the tumbler is filled with liquid, posing a potential risk of serious injury.”
The reaction between the solution and the tumbler could also lead to increased levels of iron, chromium, and nickel, states the recall notice.
Several health problems have been linked to the use of the affected tumblers, including lip, tongue, throat, stomach, and tissue damage, as well as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. Contact with the skin can cause blistering, burns, pain, and redness.
“If you experience any symptoms, it is recommended to seek medical attention,” advises the notice.
Sunscope has received 43 reports from consumers detailing various symptoms as of May 23. The most common symptoms reported were headache, nausea, cramping and/or abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
