Authorities in Montreal are investigating a disturbing incident where a Jewish school was targeted in a shooting, marking the third such attack on a Jewish educational institution in the city since October. Jewish advocacy groups have issued a warning to the community to remain vigilant in the face of these troubling events.
The Montreal police were called to the Belz school at the Young Israel of Montreal synagogue on May 29 after reports of visible projectile impacts on the building. Upon arrival at 6 p.m., officers discovered at least one bullet at the front of the school. The shooting occurred overnight on May 28, and the police are now seeking surveillance footage to assist in their investigation, according to police spokesperson Sabrina Gauthier.
Law enforcement officials have deployed a police car near the school, with investigators and crime scene technicians actively working on the case. At this stage, no suspects have been identified as the investigation continues.
Assuring the community of increased security measures, the groups stated, “While we do not have any knowledge of a specific threat against the Jewish community, we remind everyone to maintain vigilance.”
Montreal police have announced plans to increase patrols in and around Jewish community buildings and schools in response to the recent incidents.
Shooting Condemned
The shooting at the Belz school follows a similar attack on a Jewish girls school in Toronto just days prior. This latest incident marks the fourth shooting targeting a Jewish school in Montreal since last October.
Political and Jewish leaders have strongly condemned the shooting, labeling it as an act of anti-Semitism.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre took to social media to express their dismay over the incident.
Michael Levitt, President-CEO of the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, challenged the country’s leaders to address the rising violence.
The Federation CJA and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs Quebec also called for decisive action from Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante to address the ongoing anti-Semitic incidents in the city.
Mayor Plante denounced the shooting as “completely unacceptable” and reaffirmed that “anti-Semitism has no place in Montreal.”
This shooting incident is the latest in a series of targeted attacks on Jewish schools in Montreal since October 7, 2023, when Hamas initiated its assault on Israel.
