Farmers Launch “Keep The Sheep” Campaign
Farmers have initiated a “Keep the Sheep campaign” with over 9,000 signatures in an effort to overturn the live sheep export ban and make a difference before the upcoming election.
“We cannot afford to delay any longer.”
The group emphasized in a Facebook post that once the sheep are gone, they are gone for good.
Government Says Bill Will “Strengthen Sheep Welfare”
Regional Development Minister Catherine King defended the bill in parliament on May 30, stating that it would “enhance sheep welfare” to better align Australian export laws with community expectations.
“Despite various reviews and subsequent reforms, the Australian public continues to express concerns about sheep welfare,” she explained.
Ms. King highlighted that in 2023, 43,958 Australians signed a petition urging parliament to establish an end date for live sheep export by sea.
She stated that the government bill aligns with the recommendations of an independent panel appointed by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry to engage with stakeholders.
“The independent panel conducted extensive public consultations on the timing and process of the phase-out, engaging with over 2,000 individuals in person and reviewing more than 4,100 submissions and survey responses,” Ms. King added.
“Legislating a definitive end date is deemed by the government as the most effective way for producers, businesses, and markets to make informed decisions and operate within a clearly defined timeframe for the cessation of the trade.”
In parliament, Mr. Littleproud proposed a motion to refer the bill to the standing committee on agriculture for an advisory report by Oct. 8, 2024.
“The government’s failure to confront Western Australian farmers and clarify the scientific basis for shutting down this industry demonstrates a complete disregard for Western Australians, who excel in this area more than anyone else,” he expressed.
His motion was defeated with 55 votes in favor and 82 against.
Independent MP Welcomes Live Sheep Export Ban
On a different note, Tasmanian Independent MP Andrew Wilkie welcomed the introduction of the live sheep export ban in parliament.
He argued that the ban would bolster Australia’s reputation as a “ethical food producer” and a leader in animal welfare.
“While it is disappointing that the trade will continue until 2028, with no limit on the number of sheep that can be exported until then, and no ban on beef cattle exports.”
