Commentary
Recent revelations have exposed multiple instances of Beijing’s overseas spying operations, drawing criticism from the international community for the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) encroachment on the sovereignties of Western nations like the United States, Canada, France, and Australia.
In a recent segment on NTD’s Chinese language program “Pinnacle View,” commentators discussed this topic.
Spying on Dissidents
In an interview with The Epoch Times, a former Chinese agent using the alias “Eric” detailed Beijing’s tactics in targeting dissidents abroad.
Eric, who worked for the CCP’s Ministry of Public Security’s Political Security Bureau, joined a pro-democracy group while studying in the United States in 2007, attracting the CCP’s attention. Upon returning to China, he was arrested and forced to work as an overseas secret police agent for the regime.
Eric began his agent work in 2008 and defected to Australia in 2023, where he revealed his activities in Australia, Canada, and Cambodia to Australian authorities.
His duties included monitoring dissidents and individuals perceived as threats to the CCP. He cited examples like Li Guixin, a Falun Gong practitioner in the US who faced multiple arbitrary arrests before fleeing to Thailand in 2014.
Suspicious Death
Another case shared by Eric involved Hua Yong, a vocal CCP critic who fled to Canada and was found dead in 2022. While authorities ruled it as a kayaking accident, suspicions remain.
Li Jun, an independent TV producer, related to Eric’s story as he faced similar pressures while documenting Chinese culture under CCP rule.
In light of Eric’s disclosures, others like Mr. Li questioned the identity of individuals contacting them.
Rescue of Former CCP Agent in France
Wang Jingyu, a Chinese dissident in Europe, shared how he helped prevent the forced repatriation of a former CCP agent in France.
Wang and his team informed the French police about the situation, leading to their intervention. Mr. Ling attempted to escape when he realized he was being taken to China, but was eventually located in a restroom by Mr. Wang and his team. Mr. Wang recalled the moment when they found Mr. Ling cornered by over 10 people in a semi-circle around the toilet. They recorded the incident on a mobile phone, which was later snatched by the individuals who then assaulted them. It was later revealed that some of the individuals escorting Mr. Ling were from the Chinese Embassy, including a high-ranking official.
With the assistance of the French police, Mr. Ling was rescued from the situation. Guo Jun, editor-in-chief of The Epoch Times in Hong Kong, expressed concerns about the CCP’s extensive spy operations overseas, particularly targeting dissident groups such as Falun Gong. Jun highlighted the involvement of various Chinese government entities in espionage activities, under the guise of protecting the Communist Party’s political security, with substantial investments in these operations.
