NASHVILLE – A man from California, who, along with his brother, committed a horrific crime by killing their parents in a Los Angeles mansion in 1989, made a rare public appearance on Sunday. Lyle Menendez, who is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole, spoke at a true crime conference from prison and expressed his desire for freedom.
Lyle and his brother Erik entered their parents’ Beverly Hills home with shotguns and mercilessly shot their mother and father, Jose and Mary “Kitty” Menendez. The brutality of the attack shocked the nation and led to the brothers’ conviction.
Despite their claims of acting out of fear due to alleged abuse by their father, the Menendez brothers were sentenced to life in prison without parole. Now, they are seeking reduced sentences under a new California law.
During the conference, Lyle Menendez shared his aspirations for life after prison, including studying for a master’s degree and working on reintegrating into society. He also mentioned his plans to create a foundation to help survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
He is currently involved in forming therapy groups with other inmates and is set to receive a master’s degree in urban planning. Lyle expressed gratitude towards those who have supported him and his brother throughout their incarceration.
The brothers’ attorneys have argued that they should have been convicted of manslaughter instead of murder, which would have likely resulted in an earlier release from prison. Additionally, other individuals, such as former Menudo member Roy Rossello, have come forward with allegations of abuse against Jose Menendez.
