President Biden announced from the White House on Tuesday that he would prohibit migrants from seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. He emphasized that the decision was a result of Republicans backing out of a border security agreement earlier this year, which he described as the “strongest border security agreement in decades.” He pointed out that Republicans abandoned the deal because of influence from Donald Trump, who wanted to use the issue to attack Biden rather than solve the problem.
In response, Trump criticized Biden’s executive order, calling it a political move timed to benefit the president in the upcoming debate. He accused Biden of only taking action on the border after years of ineffective leadership. Allied Republicans echoed Trump’s sentiments, with the Republican National Committee adopting the slogan “Biden’s Border Bloodbath” and Representative Richard Hudson predicting that voters would hold House Democrats accountable for the crisis at the border.
On the Democratic side, the focus was on blaming Trump and Republicans for obstructing comprehensive immigration reform and blocking efforts to secure more border resources. Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan highlighted the actions taken by Biden to address border security and criticized Republicans for their inaction.
Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut expressed skepticism about the legality of Biden’s executive order but also criticized Republicans for hindering efforts to find a solution to the border crisis. He emphasized the need for bipartisan cooperation to address the issue effectively.
