President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia issued a warning on Wednesday, cautioning Western nations against supplying Ukraine with long-range missiles that could be used to attack Russia. He described this action as a “dangerous step” that could lead to reciprocal measures against Western targets.
During a news conference, Mr. Putin stated, “If someone believes it is acceptable to send such weapons to a conflict zone to target our territory and cause problems for us, then why should we not have the right to send similar weapons to regions where sensitive facilities of countries engaging in such actions against Russia can be targeted?”
Specifically mentioning Germany, Mr. Putin criticized the supply of battle tanks to Ukraine as damaging to Russian-German relations. He emphasized that allowing the use of missiles to strike Russian territory would further deteriorate relations between the two countries.
Mr. Putin made these remarks while addressing senior editors from various news agencies during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Notably, representatives from “unfriendly countries” were also present to gain firsthand knowledge of Putin and Russia.
The discussion touched on a wide range of topics, with a focus on the conflict in Ukraine. Mr. Putin reiterated his view that the responsibility for the war lies with Ukraine and its Western allies, warning that countries supplying weapons to Ukraine risk being drawn into a conflict with Russia.
Regarding potential deployment of Russian weapons in other regions, Mr. Putin’s plans remained unclear. However, Russia has previously positioned troops and armaments in Belarus and Syria, raising concerns about the escalation of tensions.
In relation to the United States, Mr. Putin expressed skepticism about any significant changes resulting from the upcoming presidential election. He also criticized the prosecution of former President Donald J. Trump, describing it as part of an internal political struggle within the U.S.
On the issue of American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who has been imprisoned in Russia on espionage charges, Mr. Putin mentioned ongoing efforts towards his release through diplomatic channels. He emphasized the need for resolving such matters based on reciprocity between the U.S. and Russia.
In conclusion, Mr. Putin’s statements underscored the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, highlighting the need for diplomatic dialogue and mutual respect in addressing international conflicts.
