NEW YORK—The search for UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s killer has expanded beyond New York City since Thompson was ambushed outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel. The FBI has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect, in addition to the $10,000 reward offered by the NYPD.
The gunman used a fake ID and paid cash during his 10-day stay in the city, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. He kept his face covered most of the time, except when checking in at a hostel. Surveillance cameras in Manhattan captured his movements, helping police create a timeline of events.
Here’s what is known about the planned attack:
Nov. 24
10:11 p.m.—The suspected shooter arrives in New York City on a Greyhound bus at the Port Authority terminal after a journey from Atlanta. He takes a taxi to the New York Hilton Midtown area and spends about half an hour there.
11 p.m.—He then takes another taxi to the HI New York City Hostel on Amsterdam Ave., where he stays until the morning of the shooting. He presents a fake ID and keeps his face covered, even in front of his roommates.
Nov. 29
The man checks out of the hostel and is not believed to have stayed elsewhere. He does not return to the hostel the next day.
Dec. 4
5:30 a.m.—The suspected shooter leaves the hostel before dawn.
5:41 a.m.—He is seen on video near the Hilton hotel, where the UnitedHealth Group’s investor conference is taking place.
6:44 a.m.—He shoots Thompson as he arrives at the hotel, then flees.
6:48 a.m.—He enters Central Park and discards a backpack.
6:56 a.m.—He leaves the park on a bicycle.
6:58 a.m.—He is spotted on another camera.
7 a.m.—He is seen at 86th Street without the bicycle.
7:04 a.m.—He enters a taxi northbound at 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
7:30 a.m.—He is near the George Washington Bridge.
Dec. 6
Investigators believe the gunman left NYC on a bus from the George Washington Bridge Bus Station.
A possible motive is suggested to be a disgruntled employee or client.
Dec. 7
Police search Central Park, finding a fingerprint from a Starbucks purchase.
Dec. 8
Scuba divers are seen at a Central Park pond as the investigation continues.
