The transition from Obama to Trump in 2016 followed the traditional process of presidential transitions in modern history. The outgoing administration engaged in extensive meetings with the incoming administration, with agency heads and staff providing training to the new team. This transition was overseen by Chris Christie and Vice President-elect Mike Pence.
The General Services Administration funded the transition, providing emergency drills, confidential documents, security briefings, and training sessions on emergency protocols to the incoming team. The FBI vetted all new hires to ensure a smooth transition of power.
This process aims to maintain continuity in government from one administration to the next. In normal times, this system works well, ensuring a seamless transfer of power and knowledge between administrations.
However, the Trump administration’s victory in the 2024 election signaled a desire for fundamental regime change within the democratic framework. The administrative state, which has accumulated significant power over time, needs to be reined in as per the voters’ mandate.
Given the unprecedented nature of this mandate, it no longer makes sense for the outgoing administration to oversee the transition to the new administration. The incoming team needs to take charge of the transition process to ensure a genuine change in governance.
Reflecting on the challenges faced during the previous transition, the Trump team has opted for a different approach this time. They are managing the transition internally, without relying on government funding or involvement from the General Services Administration. This privately funded transition aims to avoid any influence from the deep state and ensure a successful transfer of power.
The primary goal has been to prevent any attempts to undermine the system.
The FBI vetting process has also faced scrutiny from the incoming Trump administration due to past incidents of spying and raids on campaign members. This transition is unprecedented, as the power of elected leaders has diminished over time, leading to a need for change. The Trump administration is aiming to break away from the traditional norms to achieve its objectives.
This unique transition signals a potential shift in regime in Washington, following the system established by the Founding Fathers. The Trump administration is determined to learn from past mistakes and avoid repeating them in its second term.
