This week, 38 individuals were taken into custody following a series of raids aimed at dismantling an alleged crime syndicate responsible for creating an encrypted communication app for criminal activities. Charges included illicit drug trafficking, conspiracy, destruction of records, assisting a criminal organization, and firearms-related offenses. While most arrests occurred in New South Wales, suspects in Victoria, South Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory were also apprehended. The operation involved 700 Australian Federal Police (AFP) members and an international task force targeting offshore connections. According to the AFP, the raids resulted in the takedown of a global encrypted communications network utilized by Italian, Korean, and Middle Eastern organized crime groups. Seized during the raids were 205 kilograms of illicit drugs, 25 weapons, and $1.2 million in cash. The mastermind behind the “Ghost” platform, Jay Je Yoon Jung, a 32-year-old Sydney resident, was among those arrested. He will be facing court this week for allegedly creating and operating the platform. The evidence collected from the raids will undergo forensic analysis by AFP offices nationwide. The use of similar platforms by law enforcement agencies in the past has helped uncover criminal activities such as murder plots, drug trafficking, and illegal weapon purchases.
