Lionsgate recently removed a trailer for the upcoming Francis Ford Coppola film, Megalopolis, after it was discovered that the trailer contained fabricated quotes from movie critics. The intention of the trailer was to showcase that even Coppola’s most celebrated works were not always well-received by critics in the past.
According to a report by Variety, the fabricated quotes were generated by AI technology. It was revealed that the error in vetting and fact-checking the phrases provided by a consultant led to the inclusion of these false quotes in the trailer.
One example cited in the trailer was a quote attributed to Pauline Kael from the New Yorker, stating that “The Godfather” was “diminished by its artsiness.” However, it was later clarified that Kael actually praised the film.
When Variety reached out to AI service ChatGPT to provide negative critiques of Coppola’s work from reputable reviewers, the responses given closely resembled the fabricated quotes featured in the trailer.
This incident serves as a reminder that caution should be exercised when relying on AI-generated content, as inaccuracies can easily slip through. It underscores the importance of thorough verification and fact-checking in all forms of media.
