Cleanup crews in Jasper are working diligently to clear away debris in the town as a wildfire continues to cause flare-ups. Meanwhile, the province has announced plans to offer bus tours for residents to return and assess the damage.
The devastating wildfire, which struck the town on July 24, resulted in the destruction of approximately 30 percent of the buildings, including many homes. Despite the destruction, firefighters managed to save crucial infrastructure such as the hospital, emergency services building, schools, activity center, and wastewater treatment plant.
Parks Canada’s National Fire Management Officer, Dean MacDonald, mentioned that while crews had been successful in containing the fire, they anticipated its spread on August 2, which indeed occurred.
The fire’s expansion led to the temporary closure of Highway 16, the primary route through Jasper National Park, for several hours in the evening. Thankfully, the highway was reopened for commercial traffic later that night.
Fire Management Officer MacDonald expressed satisfaction with the protection operations, stating that the suppression efforts successfully extinguished any threats according to the plan and forecast.
As efforts continue in Jasper, the focus remains on debris removal and restoring the water system. Public Works staff are actively managing debris from damaged structures and ensuring proper disposal at landfills. Utility crews are also working on checking the water system and pressure, which has been fully restored and tested for safety.
Additionally, teams are preparing critical municipal buildings for re-entry, ensuring cleanliness and air quality standards are met before occupants return.
Residents eager to assess the damage firsthand will have the opportunity to participate in bus tours organized by the province. Priority will be given to those directly affected by the wildfire, and tours will be conducted with safety measures in place. Mental health and social support services will also be available to assist visitors at the disaster site.
