Dealing with mean and vicious people in public is a rare occurrence for me. Most individuals have enough maturity to avoid unnecessary conflicts. Similarly, I try to maintain civility even with those whose views I may not agree with. Recently, I had a positive interaction with a host of a left-wing cable show at a restaurant, emphasizing that personal differences should not lead to animosity.
It doesn’t bother me when people say unkind things. Just like heavyweight boxing champion Larry Holmes, I understand that being in the public eye comes with its share of challenges. I embrace my role as a Republican/libertarian commentator without expecting constant approval.
Occasionally, when faced with someone who holds different beliefs, I engage in constructive conversations that can lead to mutual understanding. One such encounter took place at a bar, where a lady named Linda expressed her disagreement with my views. Through our conversation, we discussed the misconception that liberals are more compassionate and generous than conservatives.
I shared insights from a book called “Who Really Cares?” by Arthur C. Brooks, which debunked the myth by showing that conservatives are actually more generous with their money and time compared to liberals. This generosity stems from religious beliefs and a preference for private charity over government intervention.
Linda was surprised by these findings and even offered to buy me a drink as a gesture of goodwill. Our exchange highlighted the importance of open-minded discussions and challenging preconceived notions.
