According to a report by Bloomberg News on Saturday, workers at Apple’s store in Short Hills, New Jersey, have voted against unionizing.
The Communications Workers of America (CWA) had filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) alleging illegal union-busting by Apple at the New Jersey store and others. The defeat was attributed to the company’s behavior, as per the report.
John Nagy, the operations lead at the Short Hills store and a member of the organizing committee, mentioned that Apple retail staff at the New Jersey store had applied for union representation with the Communications Workers of America on April 8.
Conversely, workers at the Towson, Maryland, Apple store voted in favor of holding a strike. A Bloomberg reporter noted on X that the date for the strikes was yet to be determined.
In June 2022, Apple workers in Maryland voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union, making them the first retail employees of the tech giant to unionize in the United States.
Both CWA, Apple, and the NLRB did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment on the Bloomberg report. Additionally, Reuters was unable to reach the machinists union regarding the decision of Maryland workers to strike.
