The legal matter concerning the Rwanda deportation scheme has been settled following the new Labour government’s decision to scrap the policy. The High Court resolved the cases of three asylum seekers who had filed legal action against the government. The claimants, represented by their lawyers, were at risk of being deported to Rwanda under the Conservatives’ immigration policy. The case was quickly concluded in light of the Labour government’s commitment to ending the Rwanda deportation scheme. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer stated that the policy was never a deterrent and was now officially abandoned. The agreement reached in court resulted in the resolution of the three claimants’ cases. The new asylum policy under the Labour government does not involve removals to Rwanda. Another asylum claim that was on hold pending the outcome of these cases will also be resolved. The Rwanda policy was introduced in 2022 as part of the Conservatives’ efforts to prevent illegal immigration. However, the policy was scrapped following the Labour Party’s landslide victory in the general election.
