The Prime Minister of Australia has urged state and territory leaders to collaborate in implementing a minimum age requirement for social media access.
Anthony Albanese has reached out to premiers and chief ministers to gather insights on necessary changes and strategies for implementation.
The request includes input on determining a suitable age limit, incorporating parental consent, and assessing the impact of phone bans in educational settings.
Additionally, each leader has been tasked with providing information on potential exemptions.
Albanese emphasized the importance of incentivizing young Australians to engage in activities beyond digital devices.
He stated, “We are aware of the negative effects of social media. It is imperative to prioritize the safety and well-being of our youth.”

“Our goal is to encourage children to engage in physical activities such as sports and community events. It is crucial for kids to have real-life experiences with peers,” stated Albanese.
Albanese also inquired about alternative means of social interaction, recreational pursuits, and community engagement for young individuals to reduce dependency on social media and promote active lifestyles.
This request was accompanied by an evaluation of the effects of imposing a minimum age requirement on current social media users and the necessary support mechanisms.
Albanese emphasized that regulations regarding social media access are a shared responsibility among various levels of government.
He emphasized, “Establishing a minimum age for social media access is about safeguarding the well-being of young individuals, not penalizing or isolating them.”
“Protecting children from harm is a collective effort that involves government entities, industry stakeholders, civil society, and local communities,” added Albanese.
The federal government has announced intentions to introduce legislation by the year-end to prohibit young individuals from accessing social media platforms, citing concerns related to mental health and safety.
While a specific age limit has not been finalized, trials for age verification are underway to explore methods for enforcing restrictions on social media access for young users.
